" Kings and emperors may rule and lord as they please, yet they are slaves to time just as the lowest peon. I myself tend to view the humble profession of the scribe as it’s servant and housekeeper: watching, taking notes. Usurp the throne as you like. Fondle your crown and plan your dynasty as you please. I’ll record you and your kin into the books of history among those who ruled long before you and now lie cold in their graves. That is your story there: seventh book from the second lowest shelf down the third aisle. Mind the cobwebs… "

The scholars and poets have divided the history of man into different ages called the cycles. They are known by different names in different lands but are all the same, the result of being ruled by the Ellysian empire for so long.

Cycle of Sleep (c. -1000 and beyond)
The age before recorded history was the Cycle of Sleep, an era known only from vague stories transmitted orally for countless generations. They speak of tribes of savage and proud men fighting a long and taxing war against the giant-kin, finally driving them to the ends of the world. Later explorers have found ruins belonging to the mysterious civilisation called the Vod-hin, a race apart from men but possessing terrible powers and knowledge which is the main source of man’s understandment of the Arcana.

Cycle of Kings (c. -1000 to -33)
The era of which there is actual remains and written stories is called the Cycle of Kings. It was a time of of countless kingdoms rising all around Drystan and forming small agricultural societies ruled by the emerging warrior class. It is a mythical age full of fantastical heroes and villains, dragons and conquest.

Imperial Cycle (c, -33 to 880)
The Imperial Calendar begins at the founding of the Ellyain empire by the mythical Egornael. The Imperial Cycle saw the rise of the Ellysians and their conquest of eastern Drystan before ending abruptly by the Skyfall. They saw little value in other cultures and sought to transform them to resemble their own, hence the reason why many nations share similar customs today, all linking to a shared Ellysian origin.

Cycle of Sunder (c. 880 to the present year of 1270)
The current age is called the Cycle of Sunder starting from the moment the Ellysian empire was thrown into chaos by Skyfall. Despite the name it has been an age of rebuilding and growth, seeing the rise of the various kingdoms released from the Ellysian’s iron grip.

The Drystanians have measured time by many different scales but the norm today is the one perfected by the Ellysians, the Imperial Calendar which is still used by the nations formerly ruled by them. Different people have different starting points to their year and use different meanings for the seasons but all use the same calendar for time-keeping.

One week consists of seven days: Firstday, Plowday, Wheelday, Flameday, Newday, Hayday and Restday. The year is 364 days long split into twelve moths. Starting from the early winter they are:

  • Samonios
  • Duman
  • Riuros
  • Anagantios
  • Ogron
  • Cutios
  • Giamonios
  • Simiuisonna
  • Equos
  • Elembiu
  • Aedrini
  • Cantlos

The calendar for the current year in the Cernish system can be found here.
